Book Design
A trilogy of books about artists Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Nam June Paik,
whose practices embraced chance operations and adaptation. Inspired by their methods, these 3 book covers were created by shredding an 8½ × 11-inch sheet of paper to produce fragmented and unpredictable compositions. Each book represents a different section of the shredded grid, mirroring the artists’ embrace of improvisation, change, and learning
to adapt within evolving systems.

Process
I chose the Chalky typeface to suggest
impermanence then adapt
the text to the specific shape.

6. Take photo of visual design system.
8. Run it through AI for
patterns and visual grid systems.
1. Cut an 81/2 x 11 inch piece of paper
into 16 squares.
2. Take each square and shred it.
3. Set up spatial grid and drop shredded paper onto another same size paper.
4. Take either hand and place down into in center of paper with fingertips together.
5. Quickly and firmly brush fingers out in full hand spread.
7. Invert colors for clarity
9. Ask AI to choose one out of the grid and
expand it to fill an 8 1/2 x 11 inch frame
Repeat step 9 two more times
